We make sure that we focus on including pieces in our environments that give our children the opportunity to learn and develop through play and enjoyment. Our children aren’t sat down and told to do traditional ‘schoolroom’ type tasks. At our day nursery in Hoddesdon, we find ways to deliver the same benefits through an activity that the children relish.
For example, we have a Community Playthings Nursery Gym in our Baby & Toddler Room. This structure is a firm favourite with our younger children and they gain so much development from it. There are steps, a slide, a curved bridge and a tunnel as well as platforms and different levels. The benefits are huge – they develop physical skills and strength, increase their confidence and independence, learn trial-and-error problem solving as they tackle the different elements, expand their capacity for imaginative play, generate higher-level social skills through helping each other and taking turns, learn to face challenges and work to overcome them, and so much more, yet the children only know that they are having fun playing.
Outdoors our environments are also highly rewarding for the children. We have two separate garden, one of our outdoor spaces has an all-weather surface and anti-impact flooring, so the fun outside never has to stop. We don’t limit ourselves to simply having fun though.
We have packed our gardens with features that encourage development in lots of different ways. We have dens and cosy areas so the children learn that they can rest and relax outside too – not always be moving at top speed out there. We offer a large climbing frame which promotes the development of physical skills, strength and movement. There is a Mud Kitchen to allow hands to get dirty and mud pies to get served. The Sensory Garden stimulates the children’s senses and expands their mindfulness and awareness. Our Growing Patch gives the children the gift of seeing the process of growth and life – with huge rewards waiting for them on their lunch plates every so often. And we have a Water Wall which fascinates the children and lets them explore this material extensively – a journey of discovery that is a delight for our children.
