Pompom Race With Straws

Children enjoy having the freedom to explore new things and learn through play. This activity is a great way for you to support your children with their problem-solving skills. Moving the pompom around the track without using their hands will challenge them to think outside the box and use the straw provided to move the pompom.

You will need:

  • Masking tape or any tape of your choice
  • Mini pompoms or ping pong balls
  • Straws

How to play

This activity is versatile and can be played at home, in the garden or at the park.

  1. To begin with, create a race track using the tape by outlining a large rectangle or circle on the floor.
  2. Within the large rectangle or circle shape you’ve just made, use the tape to make another smaller shape to form the two sides of the race track. Your child will need to crawl around the race track to blow their pompom so keep this in mind when thinking about the size of the track you create.
  3. Next, tape a start/finish line in the track.
  4. Now let the fun begin! Set your child up at the starting line with a straw in their hand and a pompom in front of them. Encourage them to avoid using their hands and to only blow through the straw to move the pompom around the track. You may wish to demonstrate this first.
  5. After they’ve practiced a few times, why not take this activity to the next level? Time how long it takes for them to get the pompom around the track and then see if you or their siblings can beat their time.

Remember to take some fun pictures of the activity and share them with your friends!
