Flashlight Treasure Hunt

children with torch

Children enjoy having the freedom to explore and learn through play and a flashlight treasure hunt enables them to do just that!

This activity can be done at any time of the day, you can just switch off the lights and pull your curtains shut, but it may be more fun when it starts to get dark outside.

You will need:

  • Flashlights, homemade lanterns or glow sticks
  • Small objects to hide such as shells or pebbles
  • A simple treasure map (optional)

How to play

  1. Before you start, collect a selection of flashlights, homemade lanterns or glow sticks. If you’d like to use homemade lanterns, these can be easily made using battery operated tea light candles.
  2. Next, decide on the objects you’d like to hide from your children and where you’re going to hide them. Remember to pick places you know your children can reach without too much difficulty.
  3. Once the objects have been hidden, you can create a simple treasure map of the room or several rooms in your house where the objects are. Your children can use the map to help them find hidden the objects.
  4. Then the fun can begin! Switch off the lights and pull the curtains closed.
  5. Your children can use the flashlights to help them follow the treasure map and light up the way to find the treasure.
  6. If you’re not using a treasure map, give your children clues to help them locate the hidden objects.
  7. You can also take it one step further and incorporate a time limit into the activity. See if your children can find all of the treasure before the timer goes off.
