Movement Dice Game

Pictured here is a standard dice. Children and adults will use these original dice for number games, board games etc. When you think of different ways you could use dice if you designed your own, the opportunities are endless. In this activity, we are looking at making a ‘Movement’ dice. Each side of the dice will have a different action/movement pictured for children, that when they roll, they can imitate. This is a fun way to encourage different types of movement play and helps to keep children physically active.

To start you will need:

  • A piece of card
  • Colouring pencils
  • A glue stick
  • A dice template

Next, you will need to choose with your child 6 movements your child will draw on each side of the dice. For example, this could be jumping, running, hopping, star jumps, balancing or walking. You could also decide on the movements and print pictures off of the internet or take pictures of your own child doing the movement to add onto your dice.

Then your child can take the time to draw these actions on each side. It doesn’t matter how they draw the actions as they will know and understand what they have drawn for each action. Alternatively, you could use pictures as described above.

Once your dice is complete you can take it in turns to roll the dice. Whichever side the dice lands on is the action you or your child will complete. You can have as many people joining in with this game to make it fun.
