Flower Painting and Sticking

At the nursery, we like to use visual aids to encourage the children to become more involved in creative activities. By placing a visual aid in the centre of the table, we’re able to encourage the children to discuss what they can see and smell.

You can set up this activity to do in your own home with a simple bunch of flowers placed in the middle of the table. Encourage your children to either paint the flowers, stick the petals onto the paper or a combination of the painting and sticking.

Whilst they’re doing this, discuss the textures of the flowers, paint and glue with them. “I think glue feels smooth and sticky, what do you think?”

You can also encourage counting exercises, such as counting the number of flower petals on each stem.

Help your children to mix the different paint colours and ask them open questions. “I wonder what would happen if we mix the red and yellow paint together, shall we try?”

You can extend the flower painting or sticking activity even further by making potions in a small bottle using water and flower petals.

Remember to post any pictures and a comment on your child’s tapestry so their key person can link this to their planning and we can extend this into your child’s learning at the nursery.
