This is a wonderful activity for kinaesthetic learners as well as a great way to get the children up and promote team-building skills. This activity is mainly adult-led with the intention of teaching young children the basic but important elements of letters and sounds.
Materials
- 10 empty cans (make sure to use a can opener that doesn’t leave sharp edges)
- Letter stickers
- Sellotape
- Ball
How to play
- Turn each can upside down and using Sellotape, secure the letter sticker to each can.
- Create a pyramid by stacking the cans – four on the bottom, three on the next row, two on the next row and one on top.
- Once you stack the pyramid, get your children to roll a ball along the ground towards the cans.
- Use the cans that fall over to help your children practise the phonic sounds rather than saying the alphabetical letter. The video below demonstrates the phonic sounds.
5. Once your children understand the phonic sounds you can support them with putting letters together to make simple words such as ‘p a t’.
